A new canal is being cut to link the Leeds Liverpool canal from the Stanley Dock branch along the river side and through the docks to the Liverpool marina.  It is hoped that this link will give boaters a secure mooring at the Liverpool end and encourage more traffic along the Leeds Liverpool canal.

These photographs will show the progress made as work is done on the dock link.

When the canal was originally built it was always planned to have a link to the dock system. This link was delayed by the dock owners and landowners who didn't like the new money of the canal company owners. A link was eventually built though due to the northward expansion of the docks it was at Stanley Dock rather than the canal terminus.

St Nicholas Place
Between Princes and Georges Docks
In front of St Nicholas Church, where boatmen once got married while waiting for their barges to be unloaded at Pall Mall, a new canal is being built. The River Mersey once came up to the walls of this church before Georges Dock was built. The famous three graces were built on top of Georges Dock and a floating platform on the river gave access to ships and the famous ferries. A roadway down to this floating landing stage was once in place here, since its removal a narrow inlet or basin remained open to the river and was full of silt and rubbish. The new canal crosses here in a culvert or tunnel under the road and across the inlet. The inlet has been filled in, the concrete culvert has been built and covered over and the road replaced.

Manchester Dock and Mann Island
Manchester Dock was once here. It was used by the Shropshire Union Canal company. It was filled in with spoil from the Mersey Tunnel. It has been a car park next to the Museum of Liverpool Life for many years. Now a new museum is being built. The old dock has been excavated to put in the foundations of the new building. There will be a culvert or tunnel for the canal to pass through here as the canal changes direction and joins the dock system. the canal will pass close to the foundations of the new museum. There will be a new basin on Mann Island
Pre Dig
This area was a car park by the Museum of Liverpool Life, there were some car show rooms by the road and a 1980s printworks. There are few older brick buildings including some railway wharfs by the graving docks.
