The higher bank on the towpath is opposite the canal arm which used to run straight into a tunnel. Boats could enter the tunnel and go directly to the coal mine inside. On the other side of the towpath is the River Douglas. There was once a bridge from the towpath across the Douglas at the point of the higher ground.
