Other Canals
England is covered in canals and waterways. Click the links above to see photos of some of them.
Canals can be divided in to groups by size:
Ship Canal: Canals wide enough for large ocean going ships. For example the Manchester Ship Canal, the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal.
Wide Canal: Canals built for wide boats with a beam of 14ft For example the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Chester Canal, the Regent;s Canal.
Narrow Canal: Canals built for narrow boats with a beam of around 7 foot. For example the Hudderfield Narrow Canal or Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal
Tub-Boat Canal: Built for trains of compartment boats or tub-boats. For example the Tavistock Canal or Bude Canal
as well as man-made canals there are River Navigations, natural rivers made navigable by the use of locks and weirs. For example the Aire and Calder Navigation or Weaver Navigation.
