Things to Do in Liverpool

There are lots of things to do in Liverpool. Here are some ideas.

The Albert Dock

Jesse Hartley designed and built the Albert Dock complex, Prince Albert opened it in 1846. It has survived WW2 and the redevelopment of the 1970s and 80s. It is now the largest group of Grade I listed buildings in Britain. It is home to the Tate, the Beatle Story and the Mersey Maritime Museum and is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in Liverpool. It is a popular place for eating and drinking or just strolling around the shops. For boaters visiting the docks it also has shower and toilet facilities. Albert Dock is the starting point for two of the cities most famous tours, the YellowDuckMarine, an amphibious tour of the city and docks; and the Magical Myster Tour of the Beatles' Liverpool.

The Williamson Tunnels

Joseph Williamson supervised the building of a large complex of underground tunnels, caverns and passageways under the streets and houses of Liverpool. No one knows for sure why these tunnels were built, after Williamsons death they were filled in and largely forgotten about. Now the tunnels are being cleared. You can now take a guided tour of some of the cleared tunnels and learn something of their unique history. The tunnels are also host to many arts events.

Liverpool One and the Met Quarter Shopping

Liverpool's shopping centre has been redeveloped beyond recognition in recent years. It now has the MetQuarter and Liverpool One shopping centres. Liverpool One is home to many high-street stores and a large Odeon cinema. Liverpool One is just over the road from Salthouse Dock and the visitor pontoons for boaters.

Ferry Across the Mersey

See the iconic waterfront from the River Mersey on one of Liverpool's famous ferries. The ferries run between the Pierhead (in front of the 3 Graces) and Wallasey and Birkenhead on the Wirral. For those with more time there is a day cruise up the Manchester Ship Canal to Salford Quays and The Lowry, Imperial War Museum.

Museums, Theatres and Galleries

Liverpool is blessed with a great many museums and galleries. Around the docks are the Martime Museum, International Slavery Museum, the Tate and Beatles Story. The new Museum of Liverpool is due to open in 2011.

At St. Georges Plateau you will find the World Museum, the Walker Art Gallery, Central Library and St. Georges Hall. All are well worth visiting. The Blue Coat gallery in the city centre has art exhibitions and displays.
